Hello thirsty traveler. This jar of water is to be used to prime the pump. There is only enough water here to get the pump flowing. Please refill it for the next thirsty traveler who may come along later desiring a cool drink.

Amethyst couldn’t believe it. It was a miracle! She now had enough water to soothe her thirst. It was safely sealed in a jar and cool against her face. The note said the water should be used to prime the pump…to pour it somewhere? But what if the water connected to the pump had dried up? Or what if the pump doesn’t work at all? Then all of this water would be lost—serving no one’s need or purpose.

Flo River stood by the pump talking to herself loud enough for Amethyst to hear her. “I can’t get water from the well without a rope. And I can’t get the pump to flow without giving it what it needs to give to me what I need. I suppose we’re in a bit of a jam since the only water anywhere close by is back on my place. If I had some water to prime this pump, we’d have more water than we could possible handle.” She turned to Amethyst. “I guess we might as well make our way on back. Come, come, little princess.”

Amethyst knew she had to make a decision. She could drink all of the water in the jar herself…maybe even share some with Miss River. Then again, she could follow the instructions on the jar, pouring good water down a pipe—believing that there would indeed be a return. But if she did, she would be taking a chance that there would be. She walked over to Flo River. “Here is some water to prime the pump.” She handed her the jar.

Flo River snatched it from her hand. “Oh! So you found the jar of water I left, huh? Great! This should just about get the water flowing. You just watch. We’re going to have more than enough in a little of no time.”

Flo River poured, then began pumping. Nothing. She pumped harder…faster. Still nothing. “Well, I’ll be,” Flo River said. “This is supposed to work.” She saw the look on Amethyst’s face and began pumping again. And just as she’d declared, there was an overflow.

“Priming the pump is similar to paying yourself first. It starts the flow. One begets the other. It’s also like giving—trusting enough that if you give, you will receive. That it will come back to you pressed down, shaken together and running over.” Flo River splashed some of the excess water from the pump on Amethyst and Amethyst kindly returned the favor. After a few minutes of playing in the water, Flo River handed the empty jar to Amethyst. “Fill this up for the next one who happens by and needs it.”

Amethyst took the jar, filled it to the rim, and tightened the lid. It felt good knowing that she was doing something
